Shameful Secret #9:

I was once part of the Judybats listserve.

Ha cha! I was never on their listserv, but the group house I lived in in Charlottesville was packed stem to stern with Judybats fans. The entire first week of living together, I think we only listened to Pain Makes You Beautiful.

At the end of the summer, during orientation week, it was announced that the Judybats were going to play a free concert in the Amphitheatre. Needless to say, stoked we were. We rolled both early and massive to get there. (The openers: Dog Society, and they were terrible.)

About an hour before the gig started, we espied the Judybats all hanging out over on the right side of the amphitheatre, so we all went over to chat. Ended up having a real nice time with them. As we were going back to our seats, one of my housemates wrote our address down and handed it to Jeff, and said: "Hey, we're having people over tonight after the show. I'm sure you get all kinds of invites, but if you're feeling up to it, come on by, we have a keg and it'll be a relaxed hang." As we walked over to where we were sitting, I leaned over and said, "Uhhh, dude...we don't have any keg or friends coming over tonight." To which he replied: "Well, we do now."

That meant a crazy post-show scramble to contact friends and obtain said keg. My gf was driving down from Shenandoah Conservatory and showed up as we were racing home to get our cars to head to the grocery, I kissed her hello and said: "Can't talk...Judybats coming...must get beer."

Needless to say, the 'Bats didn't come over.

But, at least one of us remained friends with one of them. My friend Paul (pkdc.blogspot.com) played out with Ed a great deal while they were both living in SF.

I cannot top that. I mean: I liked the Judybats first few albums. But then - oh good god.

Of note: I had a roommate who's cousin was the drummer for the Spin Doctors.

OH! Wait, even better: I had another roommate who's cousin was teh chick on the cover of that "Firehouse" album.

Okay, that's it. I've got nothin.'
